Hywel out of the woods
Racing driver Hywel Lloyd took a break from preparing for this weekend’s Formula Three event at Silverstone by working on a bigger, more powerful machine than his Dallara Mugen Honda flyer.
The 24-year-old from Corwen had a day back at his old job with family firm Corwen Forestry, servicing a massive forwarder, a forestry machine used to carry logs out of the woods and with a top speed of five mph.
But he was soon back at work with his team-mates at CF Racing, getting their 165mph plus car ready for this Sunday’s challenge in the F3 International Class double-header at the legendary Grand Prix circuit.
Hywel said: “It was a nice day and it was good to be out in the woods working on a machine – like old times really – but now I’m back to the real business of getting the car ready.
“I’m really looking forward to Silverstone. I’ve never raced on the GP circuit before though they’ve used parts of it in Formula Renault and in F3 last year.”
Lloyd is also champing at the bit to get his hands on the modified Mugen Honda engine which is being prepared by Neil Brown Engineering. He said: “It’s not quite ready yet but we should have it in time for Rockingham at the end of the month and that will mean a bit more horsepower and eight kilos less weight.”
“We have been doing a lot more work on the car though and we’re just looking to shave a few more tenths of a second off.
Lloyd and the rest of the F3 racers had been due to compete at Donington Park last weekend but problems with Donington’s race licence meant that meeting was postponed to July.
This weekend at Silverstone will see Lloyd taking part in two 30-minute practice sessions on Friday with race qualifying on Saturday ahead of the two races on Sunday.
